Also note, I called yours a MacBook Pro and not a MacBook Amateur because yours still has a full sized SD card slot, something that professional media creators still need. Looks like it should be possible, however, you might need a Thunderbolt 2 to 3 adapter or a specific ePUG enclosure for it to work on your particular MacBook Pro. I would recommend upgrading the computer before adding a eGPU.
Having thunderbolt 1 / 2 would mean your hardware or in this case CPU could also be a hinderance when connecting a eGPU. It's hard to tell if it's Thunderbolt 1 or 2 because they both use the same connector, however, i would not know how much of an improvement you will see when attaching an eGPU. You might be able to use an external GPU, but I have never tried one myself.
